Accident Registers for CDL Drivers

If you’ve been in an FMCSA reportable accident within the last year, you must provide an accident register to the DOT. Your accident is reportable if a vehicle was towed from the scene or an injury/fatality occurred. This record must be kept for three years. Your report must include:

  • Date of the accident
  • Where the accident occurred
  • The driver’s name
  • The number of injuries and fatalities
  • If hazardous material was spilled

Can you lose your CDL for an accident?

As a CDL driver, your driving standards are held much higher than other drivers since you operate some of the most dangerous vehicles. If you are unable to uphold your professional driving record, you may experience professional consequences, especially if you caused an accident that hurt other drivers. The circumstances of the accident will dictate whether your commercial driver's license is revoked.

What can you lose your CDL for?

Some accidents occur by mistake, but if your accident is caused by negligence on your part, you will likely lose your CDL and find yourself unable to get a job as a professional driver in the future. Some ways you could lose your CDL are:

  • Driving under the influence (OWI/DUI)
  • Driving at excessive speeds
  • Leaving the scene of an accident too soon
  • Using a commercial vehicle to commit a crime
  • Using a commercial vehicle to intentionally harm another driver

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

To maintain your driving privileges, it’s crucial that you remain at the scene of an accident after it’s occurred. You may experience many of the same punishments as Class D license holders such as jail time and fines but also license suspension for at least a year. Even small accidents involving property damage can get your license revoked. If you are convicted more than once, your CDL will be revoked permanently.

Reasons drivers may flee the scene include:

  • Adrenaline
  • Fear or panic
  • Intoxication
  • Lack of insurance
