Additional Requirements for Transportation Companies
Whatever requirements you require for authority to transport goods across the country, Safer CDL will help you get. This includes standard carrier alpha codes and unified carrier registration. We will also help with monitoring and assistance during the maintenance, inspection and repair of your company equipment.
Standard Carrier Alpha Codes (SCAC)
A Standard Carrier Alpha Code containing 2 to 4 letters is used to identify transportation companies in the United States. Having a SCAC code allows for automated shipment updates and increased efficiency. Effortlessly manage your logistics and update stakeholders about shipment status.
Unified Carrier Registration (UCR)
Created in 2005, the Unified Carrier Registration is the updated system for registering and collecting fees from interstate vehicle operators. Depending on the number of qualifying commercial motor vehicles in your fleet, the state will collect fees from your company. You’re also required to keep records regarding the payments. If your company operates a truck, truck tractor or bus on the interstate or you make arrangements for transportation, you must file a UCR.
Interstate Shipment Transactions Requiring USDOT Number
If your company operates commercial vehicles transporting passengers or cargo on the interstate, you need to be registered with the FMCSA and have a USDOT number. This is also essential for motor carriers who require a safety permit to haul types and quantities of hazardous materials. USDOT numbers are also required if your vehicle:
- Has a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more
- Is designed to transport 8 passengers for compensation
- Is designed to transport more than 15 passengers
- Is involved in interstate commerce
Operations Requiring MC Number
Companies that have for-hire carriers, are transporting passengers / federally regulated commodities or are arranging for their transportation in interstate commerce will need an MC number. MC numbers can also be referred to as MX or FF numbers depending on the type of authority you are granted. You may need to obtain multiple operating authorities to support your business operations. Your MC number will also dictate the type of insurance or financial responsibilities your company must maintain.
Interstate Broker Authority
If you’re a first-time broker company, you must apply for broker authority with FMCSA through the unified registration system. You will need to complete the following after you receive an MC number:
- Proof of insurance coverage, a surety bond (Form BMC-84) or a trust fund agreement (Form BMC-85)
- BOC-3 form / Designation of Process Agent Form
Interstate Leasing Company Authority
If your company is regularly engaged in the business of renting motor vehicles for 30 days or less to others where the vehicles will be used for-hire or as a private motor carrier, you will need a rental company identification number. Before you can conduct business, you must file an application and receive an identifying registration number.
Interstate Forwarders Authority
Operating authority is required for freight forwarders in interstate commerce. You need to fill out an application with the FMCSA. Having this authority is required if you are arranging the transportation of goods by FMCSA-licensed carriers. You are also responsible for the loss of or damage to transported goods. Safer CDL will help you with the application process so your company has the necessary authority to conduct business.
Monitoring and Assistance
Safer CDL will also help monitor and assist with your company equipment when it needs maintenance, inspection or repair. We will track and store copies of annual inspection reports, monitor term expirations and confirm vehicle malfunction repairs in daily technical inspections.
